What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a medical condition characterized by inflammation of one or more joints, resulting in pain, stiffness, and swelling. There are several types of arthritis, with the two most common being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis, the more prevalent form, typically occurs with age and is associated with the gradual wear and tear of joint cartilage, leading to friction between bones. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium, the lining of the membranes that surround the joints. This attack results in inflammation, which can eventually damage the joint and surrounding tissues. Other forms of arthritis may stem from infections, metabolic abnormalities, or an overactive immune system. Genetic factors also play a role in predisposing individuals to arthritis. The exact cause of arthritis varies depending on the type, but the common denominator is an imbalance in the normal functioning of joints, often leading to pain and reduced mobility.
